I graduated from Brown University in 2010 after studying Popular Culture in America and Photography.  In 2009, I won both the Fine Art category and the Grand Prize for American Photo Magazine’s GoPro Competition, sponsored by Canon.  The competition landed me with a Canon 5D Mark II and a trip to LA to work with photographer, Michael Grecco, as well as being published in American Photo and American Photo On Campus. 

 

I’ve been taking pictures for as long as I can remember, but started taking classes in high school at Branson, at the San Francisco Art Institute, and most recently at Brown and RISD. During my last year at Brown, I was lucky enough to score a one-on-one study with Peter MacGill of the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, as well as with photographers Annie Leibovitz and Jim Goldberg, among other working professionals.  Needless to say, it was intense.  If there was one thing that was drilled into my head, it was that everything must be perfect.  I learned to look at every minute detail in my work (as well as that of others) and to question its presence in order to create something that was completely as I intended. 

 

I want my work to tell a story.  It may be the story of a culture or subculture, of an individual, or it may even be completely fabricated from my own imagination.  Furthermore, the story that the viewer sees may at times be completely different from the one that I see.  I find that my favorite photographs are ones where I am intrigued by some sense of mystery or tension that I may not even be able to place or explain myself.  There is obviously something going on, but no explanation, or maybe just not a full explanation.  This sort of tension lets me come back to the picture again and again with different viewpoints and that same sense of intrigue and puzzlement.
